Information

South Uist is a stunningly beautiful and peaceful island and is where you will receive a warm and wonderful welcome from Rosemary and Derek should you choose to visit them in their picturesque guest house. Boasting four superb rooms on a bed and breakfast basis with ample private parking, Ard Na Mara is the ideal setting to get away from it all and spend some time enjoying one of the most tranquil settings in the British Isles. The island is one of the last strongholds of the Gaelic language in Scotland and Ard Na Mara originates from the old language for ‘high above the sea’.

The island of South Uist is the perfect place to unwind and relax amongst beautiful scenery and white powder beaches with a mountainous backdrop – perfect for hill walking, fishing as well as keen landscape artists and photographers. The 20 miles of machair which runs beside the sand dunes provides an excellent habitat for the rare corncrake, whilst on the mountain slopes red grouse, golden eagles and red deer can be spotted.

The guest house is also ideally located for the oldest golf course in the Outer Hebrides at Askernish. Six miles away on the east coast, the former major herring port of Lochboisdale is now the main settlement and ferry terminus on the island with a population of approximately 300.

The romantic heroine Flora Macdonald was born and spent part of her childhood in a farmhouse to the north of Milton until her father, Macdonald of Milton died. The ruin of her old home has been saved as a memorial. South Uist can be reached by ferry from Mallaig or Eriskey. There is also a smaller ferry which weaves its way through the small islets of the Sound of Harris between Leverburgh on Harris to Berneray, connected by causeways via Benbecula to South Uist. The smaller inter Island ferries are for foot passengers only. The ferries can be great fun and there is no better way to see the Isles. Leaving Oban or Uig harbour is a great experience and there is so much to see on the way.

Although no pets are allowed, you will be assured of a comfortable and happy stay with Rosemary and Derek at Ard Na Mara.
